Q: What criteria are required for Medicare to approve services?

A: Meeting Medicare eligibility means the home health patient

  1. must be a current Medicare recipient.
  2. must be homebound.
  3. A skilled care such as nursing or therapy must be medically necessary as determined by your physician.
Medicare defines homebound as a person who leaves the home infrequently for non-medical reasons. Some things to consider when determining homebound status are:
  • Shortness of breath with exertion
  • Ability to drive a car
  • Confused and/or disoriented easily
  • Inability to focus and/or memory lapses
  • Walk with assistance from device or another person
